In the heart of the Villa de Teror, a place of pilgrimage for all Canarians and a must if you are touring the island, we find our house built in the 19th century and restored by the family itself a few years ago, taking care of its original state in detail.
Guarded by the basilica and pilgrimage church “Nuestra Señora del Pino” is the building of the company Casa del Perfume Canario®. It retains the typical architecture of the former Canarian houses, in which the families have accommodated all the rooms of the house around a central courtyard, which was later closed. The more than 70 cm thick walls consist of solid stone, a large part of it “yellow stone of Teror” which is quite popular on the islands because of its distinctive and decorative color. This construction, which was also applied to the basilica, insulates very well against heat in summer and cold in winter. Inside the house, a stable temperature of 18 to 20 degrees is maintained throughout the year. And we must not forget that temperature is a plus when it comes to preserving our wonderful tradition, the perfume formulas made in the Canary Islands. Outside, the house retains its original appearance, with three glazed windows of French style and a typical closed Canarian balcony (one of the few that are still used on the island) which always bursts with flowers of the season and stands out from the centre of the village thanks to its deep green colour. The colour of the facade has returned to the original with the striking English red after several decades in white. For these reasons, the building is described by many as a “pretty doll’s house”.
Inside there is one of the first Perfumerias with homemade perfume formulas of the family, together with the only perfume museum of the Canary Islands and one of the few Spain. Here, our team, which is trained directly by the family, shows visitors in more than five languages the secret world of perfume production from the perspective of a family tradition with more than two hundred years of history. And here it is also where the sixth generation, which today runs the company, has gathered information, trained itself and regained this passion for the fragrances.
Two floors dedicated to a world of which little is generally known and which, therefore, makes it even more interesting and enigmatic. In it, we immerse ourselves in a walk through the history of perfume and the different techniques used by the family. We will also be able to see a magnificent winery maturing old-fashioned fragrances and smell perfumes in different stages of the process. An enjoyable visit in which you will also know our white room of formulation of perfumes, exclusive raw materials, extraction processes and many other things. The tour will end with an olfactory tasting that will awaken your nose and make you appreciate this sense in a different way than we are usually used to.
